Cymande’s Trevor White and Pablo Gonsales

by Sam Kelly on December 28th, 2020

On top of everything that the Covid-19 pandemic has thrown at us, it has been a sad end to 2020.   A friend and fellow musician, Trevor White died on 5th November.  Trevor was lead vocalist for a time when Cymande reunited in 2014 and he featured on the latest album “A Simple Act of Faith”.  Trevor also toured in Germany with my reggae band, FOWOKAN.  He was a great ambassador for British black music and a mega bass man.

On 2nd December 2020, I was very saddened to learn that my old friend of nearly fifty years, Seyoum Netfa (or Pablo Gonsales as his many fans knew him) died whilst visiting his homeland, Jamaica.  Seyoum was a fellow core member of Cymande and we have played together since 1971.  We were the percussive team, bringing a range of West Indian back beats and Rasta rhythms that form such a vital part of the Cymande “sound”.   He was a devoted Rastafarian and a kind, gentle man.  Seyoum battled many health issues over the years but would always turn up for rehearsals or live shows as he “didn’t want to let anyone down”.  Miss you.
