by Sam Kelly

11703309_10207174989236980_5741296513212851455_o[1]Had a great mini-tour with Janice Harrington 27th, 28th and 29th June 2015.  Band was Janice, me, Spy Austin, Paul Jobson, Tony Qunta and Rowena Poole.  This picture was taken by Wendy Auld at Coolham Village Hall.  There was a great on-stage vibe as we moved across the Blues, some Gospel and some of Janice’s original songs – and the audience enjoyed it too.  Thanks Graeme Tame of Tame Promotions for making it happen.

Sam’s interview with Lenny Henry (OBE)

by Sam Kelly

I had the pleasure of meeting Lenny Henry at Willow Studio in Harrow.  Lenny’s agent rang me to ask whether I would be interested in talking about my long career  in the “Blues”.  What a great guy that man is.  We hit it off immediately.  I has asked my friend and fellow musician, TJ Johnson, to come along and jam.  Lenny was blown away when we grooved, funked, reggaed and shuffled our way across the “Blues”.  I think he wanted to join in!!!   The show is out in August 2015 on Sky Arts – it’s called “Lenny’s got the Blues”.  Keep you posted!!

by Sam Kelly

_rs bluestage fly2k Remscheid

Just returned from a fabulous couple of days in Germany with SAM KELLY’S BAND – Tony Qunta (guitar/vocals), Andy Hodge (bass/vocals) and me (drums/no vocals!!).  Two festivals – the first one in Remscheid run by Uli Spormann on 24th April and the second run by Wolfgang Pieker on 25th April in Mettmann.  We were so well looked after from the minute we landed in Germany until we left to come home.  The venues were superb, great sound engineers and the audience really loved it.  Can’t wait to go back and do it all again!!

On Tuesday 24th February,  I took my Sam Kelly’s Band (withTony Qunta and Spy Austin) to play at this welcoming new music venue in Hooley, Surrey.

The Club is run by Richard Dunning of Rich Sound and Entertainment together with his great sound engineer, Simon Taylor.  Richard also presents “Blues On The Radio” on Croydon so I went along that afternoon for a live on air interview .  I had to suggest six tracks which have influenced me over the years.  Here are the ones I chose:

1) ERROL LINTON – BLUES VIBE “Howlin for my darling”
3) JOAN ARMATRADING – LOVE & AFFECTION “Show some emotion”
4) FRANCESCO BOLDINI – PLUS 42 “Born under a bad sign”
5) PROFESSOR LONGHAIR – BIG CHIEF “Mardi Gras in New Orleans”

It was really great chatting to Richard – I could have gone on for hours, but I had a show to get too – and so did he!!!

Besides the pleasure of performing at this Club, we also got some great photos taken by John Bull of Rockrpix (what a photographer!!) as well as some really superb HD video footage by Phil Honley who has kindly uploaded this onto Youtube.  Thank you for doing such a great job and helping to promote my Sam Kelly’s Band.
