For many years, I have been involved in Drum Workshops and Tuitorials.  I have learnt so much during my career as a professional musician and this has made me want to assist, aid and recognise new talent or to help develop existing drum skills.   As you probably know, my way of teaching is not the conventional theory-led process.  I hope to encourage you to “feel” the groove, to gain confidence and, basically, to “go for it”!!  I’ll be there to help!!

Please check out my new page on this website – “Drum Workshops & Tuition”.

Paul Jones’ Charity Night with Sam Kelly’s Station House

by Sam Kelly

At Cranleigh Arts Centre on 17th/18th December 2012, Bluesman and BBC Radio 2 presenter, Paul Jones, held his annual Christmas Charity Benefit.   Sam Kelly’s Station House were invited to form the House Band with Sam Kelly (Drums), Paul Jobson (Musical Director/Keyboards), Spy Austin (Bass), Jerome Marcus (Percussion), Tony Qunta (Guitar) and Dudley Ross (Guitar).  Invited guests were Imelda May, Chris Barber, Andy Fairweather Low, Mike Sanchez, Debbie Giles, Steve Brookes and surprise guest, Robben Ford.  Paul Jones is patron of the Charity which, over the years, has brought many artists to this event such as Eric Clapton, Pee Wee Ellis, Guy Tortura and Papa George.  Both days were a “sell out” and raised over £1,600 for Cranleigh Arts Centre and ‘Make A Wish Foundation’.
All artists gave memorable and exciting performances.  The evening started with a short set by Steve Brookes accompanied by Paul Jones on harmonica.  Then followed Robben Ford, who was coincidently in town on a promotional tour.  He performed two great tracks –  ‘Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky’ and ‘Bird’s Nest Bound’ from his forthcoming album ‘Bringing It Back Home’ to be released on 18th February.   Next was the lovely Imelda May,  hitting the stage with her brand of rockabilly including ‘Big Bad Handsome Man’, great versions of ‘Spoonful’ and ‘Rollin’ & Tumblin’, ending with ‘Santa Claus Is Back In Town’.
Mike Sanchez provided a blast of goodtime rock ‘n’ roll from Jerry Lee Lewis to stompin’ Howlin’ Wolf rootsy blues. The finale of the evening had all the artists join in a rousing version of ‘Merry Christmas Baby’.
Day Two brought out the dulcet tones of Debbie Giles with her version of ‘Help The Poor’, ‘Iny Weeny Bit’ and ‘Little By Little’.
The announcement of Chris Barber was a surprise favourite with the audience.  He provided an injection of dixieland with tracks as ‘Weeping Willow’, ‘I’ll Be Rested’ and ‘Music From The Land Of Dreams’ taken from his album ‘Memories Of A Road Trip’.
Andy Fairweather Low graced the stage with an acoustic version of the Amen Corner classic  ‘Half As Nice’ setting the audience into full voice before inviting the band back on stage for ‘Wide Eyed & Legless’ and ‘Gin House’. Chris Barber is invited to join in a medley ‘Lay Your Burdon Down/Will The Circle Be Unbroken’. The evening ended with a finale of ‘Merry Christmas Baby’ and an encore of ‘Let The Good Times Roll’.
Congratulations and heartfelt thanks to Paul Jones for putting together two successful nights of musical entertainment for the audience, the participants and the beneficiaries.

Gregor Hilden & Herzog Allstars

by Sam Kelly

A new project for the end of 2012 – I was introduced to the highly-respected German guitarist/composer, GREGOR HILDEN, by our dear friend Axel Lanz, proprietor of Herzog Ernst, Celle, Germany.  Axel had a plan to link Gregor with myself, Paul Jobson and Spy Austin to create a “groove” band that would perform a short mini-tour of Christmas gigs from 3rd to 5th December.  We also introduced ROWENA POOLE into the musical mix, bringing with her those fabulous vocals and happy, vibrant stage presence.  So “Gregor Hilden & the Herzog Allstars” band was formed.  We had an opening night sell-out at Herzog Ernst, Celle on Monday 3rd December so a second date was added.  Then again at Music Star, Norderstedt on Wednesday 5th December, thanks to Wolfgang and his team.   We all look forward to performing again throughout 2013 – please contact for further booking/band information.
